Action Alert: Outreach to Congressional Representatives on Fraud Prevention
This message was sent from the League on April 29, 2025.
Dear Colleagues,
We wanted to share with you a recent congressional letter to the U.S. Department of Education and the U.S. Department of Justice, led by Representative Young and supported by other Republican members of Congress, raising concerns about financial aid fraud targeting California Community Colleges.
In this letter, the members request an investigation into the scope and impact of fraudulent activity affecting California’s community colleges and call on the U.S. Department of Education and the Department of Justice to take “immediate action”.
We encourage you to use this moment to engage with your Congressional members by:
- Sharing what your campus is doing to identify and prevent fraudulent student activity
- Highlighting tools or safeguards you’ve implemented
In your outreach, please CC our team in your communications so we can track and support these advocacy efforts accordingly: advocacy@ccleague.org
Your firsthand experience is critical in shaping how Congress and federal agencies respond to this issue.
In addition to this federal request, we also wanted to bring to your attention a separate state-level development:
Assembly Member Rubio has submitted a request for an audit through the California Joint Legislative Audit Committee. This proposed audit would focus on fraudulent students, the use of bots, and the impact this activity is having on “faculty working conditions”.
Thank you for your continued leadership and advocacy.
