CCCT and CEOCCC Boards Unanimously Adopt Joint Resolution Affirming Commitment to Black and African American Students
SACRAMENTO, CA – As many California Community Colleges celebrate Juneteenth, the Community College League of California (League) is pleased to announce on Friday, June 5th, by a unanimous vote, the California Community College Trustees (CCCT) Board and the Chief Executive Officers of California Community Colleges (CEOCCC) Board approved a joint resolution affirming their commitment to student success for Black and African American students. The CCCT and CEOCCC’s joint resolution also reaffirms League's commitment to remove systemic barriers for Black and African American students and work collaboratively with its governing board, the California Community College system as well as local, state and federal governments, businesses and community-based organizations to provide race-conscious decision making in support of this underserved student population.
“With nearly three-quarters of California’s Black undergraduates (72 percent) enrolled in a California Community College, we serve the largest population of Black and African American students in the state," says Larry Galizio, President & CEO of the Community College League of California. "Our colleges’ unwavering commitment to diversity and inclusion requires system leaders to identify and eliminate barriers to equity and act intentionally to create safe and welcoming environments for all students in pursuit of post-secondary education.”
In light of the recent killings of George Floyd, Breonna Taylor and Ahmaud Arbery and protests that have called for policy change to address institutionalized racism, the League recognizes now more than ever the importance in working with its CCCT and CEOCCC Board leadership to address inequities that persist throughout the California Community College (CCC) system and answer the Chancellor’s Office Call to Action. The League stands in solidarity with CCC Black and African American students in support of the Black Lives Matter movement and seeking change in not only policing but in systems that benefit from structural racism.
