Keynote Speakers

Opening General Session Keynote
Sunday, January 27, 2019
11:45 a.m. - 1:15 p.m.
Dr. Manuel Pastor

California’s Emergence as a Bellwether State

Just a few decades ago, California confronted many of the challenges the country now faces. How did the Golden State emerge from its past of social strife to become a bellwether for the rest of the country? Join us at the 2019 Annual Legislative Conference with keynote speaker and award-winning sociologist Dr. Manuel Pastor. Dr. Pastor will guide us through an improved California, with lessons that the rest of the nation should note. He shared highlights and research that led to his new book, State of Resistance, which makes the case for honestly engaging racial anxiety in order to address our true economic and generational challenges, renewing our commitment to public investments, cultivating social movements and community organizing, and more.

Dr. Manuel Pastor is a professor of sociology and American studies and ethnicity at the University of Southern California, where he also serves as director of the Program for Environmental and Regional Equity and as co-director of USC’s Center for the Study of Immigrant Integration. Dr. Pastor has received Guggenheim and Fulbright fellowships as well as the 2012 Wally Marks Changemaker of the Year award from the Liberty Hill Foundation and is author of State of Resistance: What California’s Dizzying Descent and Remarkable Resurgence Mean for America’s Future (The New Press). He currently holds the Turpanjian Chair in Civil Society and Social Change at USC.

General Session Keynote
Monday, January 28, 2019
9:45 a.m. - 10:45 a.m.
California State Senator Connie Leyva

Senator Connie M. Leyva is serving her second term in the California State Senate. The district includes the cities and communities of Bloomington, Chino, Colton, Fontana, Grand Terrace, Montclair, Muscoy, Ontario, Pomona, Rialto and San Bernardino.

Senator Leyva is committed to improving California’s schools, environment and communities, as well as creating quality jobs throughout the 20th State Senate District and California.  She firmly believes that California families benefit most when we invest in and help strengthen small businesses and other job drivers that create good paying jobs in our local communities. During her first term in office, Senator Leyva authored several important pieces of legislation signed into law.

Senator Leyva serves as Chair of the Senate Education Committee, California Legislative Women’s Caucus and the Senate Democratic Caucus, as well as on the Budget and Fiscal Review, Business, Professions and Economic Development, Elections and Constitutional Amendments and Health committees and the Budget Subcommittee #1 on Education. She also currently serves on the California Commission on the Status of Women and Girls and the Senate Select Committees on California-Mexico Cooperation, Manufactured Home Communities, Ports & Goods Movement and Women and Inequality: Strategies to Promote Opportunity.

A lifelong activist standing up for working people and families, Senator Leyva started working at her local Alpha Beta market as a senior in high school. She served as both Union Representative and President of the United Food and Commercial Workers (UFCW) Local 1428, helping grocery workers gain a stronger voice for fair wages and benefits. Following in that tradition of community service and action to improve the lives of others, she was elected in 2004 as the first woman President of the California Labor Federation, representing more than 2.1 million workers throughout the state.

Please note our keynote speakers have recently changed. Updated Tuesday, January 8.
