General Info

General Info

Welcome to the 2018 Annual Trustees Conference. Trustees are leaders when they promote and sustain their colleges’ missions to assure student learning and make a difference for their communities. They are responsible for anticipating and responding to new challenges related to environmental and architectural sustainability, leadership turnover, accountability, and changing communities. Effective governing boards ensure that their colleges continue to provide high quality education and service.

Effective governing boards are created by dedicated, knowledgeable trustees and chief executives. Your participation in the 2018 Trustees Conference will strengthen the skills and knowledge required to lead your colleges and be accountable to your communities. Conference speakers and sessions will explore student success, fiscal responsibility, educational trends and effective trusteeship.

Thank you on behalf of CCCT for the work you do and the leadership you provide for the people of California.

Ann Ransford
President
California Community College Trustees

College of the Canyons is excited to host a “Doing What Matters” CEO Institute on Thursday, May 3, 2018 from 9:30am – 3:00pm, supported by Vice Chancellor for Workforce and Economic Development Van Ton-Quinlivan and Dr. Lynn Shaw, Visiting Dean of Sector Strategies (CCCCO). This one-day institute will be offered prior to the Community College League of California’s upcoming 2018 Annual Trustees Conference in Valencia.

The purpose of the “Doing What Matters” CEO Institute is to provide an opportunity for CEOs to interact with business leaders, external partners and leaders in the workforce and economic development sectors in California, as well as with each other. The focus of the Institute is to provide an opportunity for candid conversations among the participants regarding the challenges of developing strong workforce alignments and partnerships between employers and the community colleges. In addition, this Institute will provide an opportunity to dialog and think together about how to lead change within our colleges.

The event will be held at College of the Canyons in the Dr. Dianne G. Van Hook University Center (Room 258), and will conclude with a special tour of the building, which is home to more than 40 bachelor’s, master’s, and doctoral programs offered by four partner universities in addition. The University Center is also the hub of our regional Economic Development activities, services and initiatives, including the Santa Clarita Valley Economic Development Corporation.

These structured conversations will enable CEOs and our business partners alike to:

  • Share stories of successful workforce development initiatives;
  • Speak candidly about challenges and limitations;
  • Be inspired as to how they can lead change;
  • Overcome barriers; and
  • Work collaboratively with multiple entities to shape better futures and move forward in focused and meaningful ways.

By bringing together both education and business leaders in this up-close and personal way, we will identify practices that can help our businesses thrive and grow in California.

We are fortunate to have expert leaders from the field as partners in the Institute.
These expert leaders will bring an additional perspectives that will assist CEOs in affirming their role in facilitating change while identifying opportunities that will enhance their success. By participating in these dialogs, CEOs will be provided with an opportunity to strategize about how to deal with internal resistance so that they can meaningfully engage employers. In the process, our CEOs will have an opportunity to validate and affirm their role in facilitating change as well as learning to work through issues to be successful.

Additionally, expert leaders in the field will be participating in these dialogs, and will enhance the perspectives presented and provide an opportunity to assist CEOs in strategizing about how to deal with internal resistance so that they can meaningfully engage employers. In the process, our CEOs will have an opportunity to validate and affirm their role in facilitating change as well as learn to work through the issues to be successful.

Pre-Conference Activities
Since 2009, the Dr. Dianne G. Van Hook University Center at College of the Canyons has become part of our solution to the lack of access to upper division graduate degrees, continuing education, and teaching credentials available in the Santa Clarita Valley. This lack of access to upper division degrees in Santa Clarita has created significant barriers for those in greatest need of access including single parents, parents with childcare issues and working adults who cannot afford 2-hours of driving time each way just to attend a night class in the greater Los Angeles area.

Hence, the vision for the University Center was to expand access and opportunities in an educational facility built on partnerships that would bring training for the workforce and our transfer students under one roof.  More than 3000 students have graduated from 40 programs offered in the University Center and have been able to pursue their dreams!

College of the Canyons has held numerous information sessions and tours for colleges visiting on a regular basis. With the CCLC – Annual Trustees Conference being hosted at the Valencia Hyatt, we are making this information available to CEOs and trustees who would like to learn how their colleges can provide access to Bachelor’s, Master’s, and Credential programs.

If you would like to learn more about the University Center, join us for a tour on Thursday, May 3rd from 3:00pm – 4:00pm or on Friday, May 4th from 11:30am – 1:00pm. If you are interested, please RSVP to the Chancellor’s Office by sending us a confirmation at rsvp@canyons.edu by April 25, 2018. In your RSVP please include – your name, title, email, and tour “date/time” you are interested in.
